Woman crushed to death in Arakaka mining accident

A 44-year-old woman was crushed to death on Tuesday after a section of a mining pit she was working in collapsed at Arakaka Backdam, North West District.

Dead is Eleen Figuera, a punter of Two Miles Arakaka, North West District.

While details surrounding the incident remain sketchy, Stabroek News understands that Figuera and three of her colleagues were searching for gold when a section of the mining pit suddenly caved in and covered her.

She was taken out and escorted to the Pakera District Hospital where she was examined and pronounced dead on arrival.

Her body is currently at the hospital mortuary awaiting an autopsy.

An investigation has since been launched.
