Ramlall Bassant, the 64-year-old resident who was found dead at Goed Bananen Land, East Canje Berbice on Thursday, died from alcohol poisoning, an autopsy has found.

Stabroek News confirmed that a post-mortem examination, which was conducted yesterday, revealed that Bassant, also known as ‘Datt,’ of Lot 12 Goed Bananen Land, died of acute alcohol intoxication.

Bassant was discovered with his pants undone a few streets away from his house around 6 am on Thursday.

Stabroek News was initially told that the man was also discovered with blood on various parts of his body.

However, Commander of ‘B’ Division Paul Langevine, when contacted yesterday, said that no information was given to him to suggest that Bassant was sexually assaulted sometime before his death.

Family members said Bassant left home on Wednesday around 8.30 pm.

His mother, Lilian Bassant, 84, said she last saw her perfectly healthy son on Wednesday evening minutes after 8 pm.

The woman noted that her son, who was unemployed, had always lived with her and she would take care of him financially.

Residents, however, described Bassant as a known alcoholic and said that he would often visit a friend who resides a short distance away from where his body was found.
