Cyclist dies after Mahaicony accident

A 28-year-old pedal cyclist is now dead after he was allegedly struck down by a motor car along the Letter G Public Road, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara early Monday morning and the driver has already been charged with two traffic-related offences both of which he denied.

Dead is Brian Fordyce, a resident of Mahaicony, ECD.

Reports are that the accident occurred around 1.30am on Monday after which Fordyce was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Mahaicony Hospital.

He succumbed at 6am on Monday while receiving medical attention.

The driver of motor car, PGG 1565, who has been identified as Teoron Frederick, 26, of Paradise Village, West Coast Berbice was yesterday charged with failing to stop after an accident and failing to render assistance.

He appeared in the Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Wanda Fortune.

Frederick denied the charges and was placed on self-bail and $100,000 respectively.

He is likely to face additional charges including causing death by dangerous driving.

Enquiries, Stabroek News was told revealed that at the time of the accident Fordyce was proceeding east along the northern side of the road while the motorcar which was heading in the said direction collided with the rear of his cycle.

As a result of the impact, Fordyce fell onto the roadway.

He was picked up and rushed to the hospital.

The matter has been adjourned to December 5.
