Mahaica guard dies after being struck by pick-up

A security guard is now dead after he was struck by a pick-up truck along the Danzie Public Road, at Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara yesterday afternoon.

Dead is Muneshwar Narine, 56, of 15 Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara. The accident occurred around 2 pm.

According to a Guyana Police Force statement on the accident, the driver of the pick-up, bearing licence plate PNN 8778, subsequently passed a breathalyser test but is in custody assisting with the investigation. At the time of the accident, Narine was riding a bicycle.

Police said their enquiries disclosed that the pickup, which was being driven by a 36-year-old resident of Number 53 Village, Corentyne, was proceeding east along northern carriageway of the road when the driver alleged that the cyclist, who was riding in front of him, suddenly swerved into his path and they collided.

The cyclist, according to the police, was later rushed to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital by an ambulance and he was pronounced dead on arrival.
