A 44-year-old resident of Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara, died yesterday after she was crushed by a truck as she attempted to cross the four lane East Bank Public Road in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

Dead is Shondell Sparrock, an employee of National Hardware.  Her sister, Sandra, told Sunday Stabroek that Shondell was returning home from work and had stopped to buy groceries for their mother, who is a wheelchair user. “She has no children…she is the one who takes care of my mother,” a distraught Sandra explained. According to her, the truck driver, who is currently in police custody, said he did not see the woman.

A statement from the Guyana Police Force indicated that the truck, GMM 1121, which was driven by 27-year-old Avinesh Rudradeo, was negotiating a left turn into Bagotstown Public Road western carriageway from the northern side of the Demerara Harbour Bridge access road, while Sdondell was crossing the carriageway from east to west. She was hit by the left side of the truck and fell on the road.

Having died on the spot, Shondell Sparrock’s body was removed and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary.

A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver but no trace of alcohol was detected in his breath and he was served a notice of intended prosecution while the vehicle was lodged to be examined.
