Grove labourer beaten at birthday celebration, brother held

A birthday celebration ended bloodily during the wee hours of yesterday after a young labourer was allegedly struck to this head by his brother during an argument at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara.

Injured is Parmanand Persaud, 26, of Lot 148 Station Street, Grove, EBD.

Persaud sustained massive head injuries. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and rushed to the Diamond Hospital where he was treated and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

His condition was listed as critical up to last evening.

The suspect who has been identified as his 22-year-old brother also a labourer of Lot 27 Little Diamond, EBD was arrested and is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

The incident occurred around 00.05am yesterday at the suspect’s house.

While details surrounding the incident remains sketchy, Stabroek News understands that the suspect reportedly invited Parmanand to his house to celebrate their sister’s birthday

Whilst there, they were imbibing when an argument ensued between  Parmanand and the suspect and later escalated into a fight.

The suspect reportedly told investigators that he and a neighbour had a misunderstanding and Parmanand began to argue with him.

As a result, he became annoyed, armed himself with a piece of  wood and dealt Parmanand a lash to his head which caused him to lose consciousness.

Parmanand was picked up by the police and rushed to the hospital.

 Investigations are ongoing.
