Cops, alleged carjackers trade gunfire at Sparendaam -one held

An alleged carjacker was shot early yesterday morning after he and three accomplices allegedly opened fire on the police who thwarted their attempt to steal a parked motor car from West Road, Sparendaam.

The injured man, who has been identified by the police as a 24-year-old resident of Sophia was shot once in his leg.

He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was treated and subsequently taken into custody.

The police in a press release said that ranks who were responding to a report of the quartet attempting to steal the car were confronted by the men at Goedverwagting.

“The suspects allegedly discharged several rounds at the lawmen who returned fire and wounded one of men, whilst the others reportedly escaped”, the release said.

Investigators are making stringent efforts to apprehend the three other suspects, it added.

A search was conducted at the injured suspect’s home in his presence during which a quantity of ammunition was unearthed.

He is also wanted by the police in ‘A’ Division for the simple larceny of a car. Investigations are ongoing.
