Cop freed of drunk driving charge after prosecution fails to prove case

Ryan Persaud, the police constable who was involved in the accident that left motorcyclist Akemo Anthony dead in September, was yesterday freed of a related driving under the influence charge.

It is alleged that Persaud on September 1st, at Mandela Avenue, drove motor vehicle PVV 4652 while his breath alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.

Persaud, who was on trial before Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer in Georgetown, learnt yesterday that the prosecutor failed to prove the case against him.

The charge was subsequently dismissed.

Persaud was also charged with causing the death of Anthony.

Police had said the police constable was driving a force minibus, PVV 4652, when he collided with Anthony, 23, who was proceeding in the opposite direction along Mandela Avenue.
