Charity man gets two years for illegal gun, ammo

A machine operator was yesterday sentenced to two years in jail, after he pleaded guilty to having an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in his possession.

Delmar De Oliveira, 29, of Lot 782 Charity Housing Scheme, on December 23, at Mafia Landing, Chi Chi Backdam, North West, allegedly had a shotgun in his possession without being the holder of a firearm licence. It is also alleged that on the same date, at the same place, he had one cartridge in his possession, without being the holder of a firearm licence.

De Oliveira pleaded guilty to the charges read to him by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

According to Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh, police from the Port Kaituma Police Station were on Mafia Landing, when they saw De Oliveira. A search was conducted on the house he was in at the time, and in a bedroom, a haversack containing the firearm and cartridge was found. The man was arrested and charged.

De Oliveira was fined $50,000 on each offence and was sentenced to two years in prison.
