Venezuelan remanded over immigration fraud charge, two others fined

Two Venezuelans were on Friday fined for failing to present themselves to an immigration officer after entering Guyana, while a third was remanded to prison on the same charge, after a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf by the court.

Feito Jose Perez Reyez, 27, Alexis Jose Campero Medina, 30, and Aldrondro Rojo Belia, 25, were accused of failing to present themselves to an immigration officer after entering Guyana by sea at Imbotero, Barima-Waini, on December 22, 2018.

The charges were read to them at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Reyez and Medina pleaded guilty to the charge, and were fined $15,000 each. Failure to pay the amount will require them to serve a default sentence of two weeks imprisonment, before being deported.

A not guilty plea was entered for Belia by the court after he failed to respond to the charge. Belia claimed, however, that he did present himself at an immigration office in Morawhanna, Region 1, but the police prosecutor said there are no records of Belia at the outpost.

Belia was remanded to prison until December 31, 2018.
