(Trinidad Express) The suspect in the murder of Sangre Grande schoolteacher Margaret Guevarra may survive his gunshot injury.
The 44 year old man underwent emergency surgery on Monday for a gunshot wound to his face in what police believe was a suicide attempt after he killed Guevarra, his close female relative.
The life-saving surgery was done at the Port of Spain General Hospital.
He is currently warded in the Intensive Care Unit under police guard.
Doctors have given him a 50-50 chance of survival.
The suspect survived a bullet wound which blew away part of his face, mainly his jaw and nose.
Guevarra, a mother of five, and the suspect were found on the floor of her bedroom on Monday morning.
One of her daughters was awakened by her mother’s screams, followed by four explosions. It happened shortly before 8 a.m.
Police said that the suspect is the holder of a firearm users’ license, and owned a 12-gauge shotgun.
Crime Scene experts retrieved found four spent shells and two live rounds of 12 gauge cartridges and the firearm in the bedroom.
An autopsy is expected to be done on Guevarra’s body today at the Forensic Science Centre.
