(TRINIDAD EXPRESS) GARTH ROAD in Princes Town is one of the worst roads in the country, according to councillor Vashti Sookhoo.

The entire length, between Princes Town and Williamsville, is an obstacle course of potholes, depressions and landslides.

The bridges are broken and the road floods with every heavy rainfall.

Sookhoo said since the last general election, very little maintenance has been done. And with the current inclement weather, Sookhoo said she fears that there will be further deterioration.

“Since 2015, it has become very difficult to get the road fixed or even to have it patched. This area is prone to landslips and the residents have suffered severe flooding, which further deteriorates the roads. There are two bridges which are nearing collapse and a major under-crossing that is already broken. The Ministry of Works did put some barricades but this is not good enough,” she said.

Sookhoo said there are three schools in the area which is a safety concern as there are no pavements for the children.

She said there are alternate routes, but they are not known to outsiders.

She said the road falls under the purview of the Ministry of Works and not under the regional corporation.

Sookhoo made an appeal to the Ministry to repair the roads in her electoral district.

“I am asking them (the Ministry) to pay attention to these communities. There has been some works to the Naparima/Mayaro Road but there is no maintenance for the others.

“I believe it is one of the worst roads in the country. The minister has made promises to residents but this has not been fulfilled and I am once again appealing for the Ministry to do something,” she said.
