New start date for trial of accused in elderly remigrant’s murder

The trial of Kevon Alfred, who is accused of murdering 75-year-old remigrant Joyce Lewis, is now scheduled to commence this morning at the High Court in Georgetown.

Following the empanelment of a jury, the start of the trial, which was initially set to begin last Tuesday, had been deferred after attorney Stanley Moore indicated to the court that because of other obligations, he would no longer be able to represent the accused.

Justice Navindra Singh, who will be presiding over the case, subsequently adjourned the matter to facilitate Alfred retaining another lawyer.

Alfred has since secured another lawyer.

The charge against Alfred states that he murdered Lewis during a robbery, between March 25th and March 26th, 2014.

He has denied the charge.

Representing the state are prosecutors Abigail Gibbs, Narissa Leander and Tiffini Lyken, who together will be calling 15 witnesses.
