A 64-year-old Triumph, East Coast Demerara resident was today remanded to prison after he was charged with threatening to kill President David Granger.

Motilall Balkaran, of Lot 97 Triumph, was faced with two charges when he was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.

The first charge alleged that Balkaran on March 20th, at Triumph, made use of threatening language, that is, he made a phone call to 911, threatening to kill Granger by placing a bomb in his office at the Ministry of the Presidency.

It was further alleged that on the same date and at the same location, the accused caused public terror by calling 911 and threatening to kill Granger by placing a bomb in his office.

Balkaran denied both charges.

Attorney Tiffany Jeffrey-Durant, who represented the accused, requested that her client be granted reasonable bail on the grounds that the call could have been made from anyone residing at his home.

However, Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail being granted given the seriousness of the threat.

Subsequently, bail was denied by the Chief Magistrate on the grounds of the seriousness of the threat and public safety.

Balkaran was then remanded to prison. He is expected to make his next court appearance before the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court One on April 16th.
