De Veldt shooting incident not a robbery

Dear Editor,

The Guyana Police Force is responding to an article in the Friday January 12, 2018 edition of the Stabroek News under the caption ‘Bullets rain as gang raid De Veldt -cops under fire over delayed response ‘.

Please be informed that a team of police under the command of a very senior officer visited the De Veldt community on Saturday, January 13, 2018 and conducted a thorough investigation which has revealed that the alleged shooting incident was not robbery related but was linked to an apparent dispute over a drug related transaction between several alleged cultivators of cannabis sativa. A person of interest has since been detained and is cooperating with investigators in relation to the incident.

The administration of the Force notes once again the sensationalization of articles in the press that indicate one thing when in fact it is something else, and wishes once again to caution against such reckless publications.

Yours faithfully,
Jairam Ramlakhan
Superintendent
Public Relations and Press Officer
Guyana Police Force
