Dear Editor,
On July 1st, 2018, Mexicans will elect a new President who will serve from December 1st, 2018 to November 30th, 2024. As it has been the case since the enactment of the 1917 Constitution, the President is not allowed to run for re-election. The independent electoral authority, INE will coordinate the process and citizens will be in charge of counting the votes at polling stations.
The election on July 1st, 2018, will be the largest election ever held in Mexico. New members will be elected for the Federal Senate (128 senators), as well as for the entire Chamber of Deputies (500 MPs). Nine states will elect governors and 25 states will elect new mayors. An unprecedented grand total of 3,406 positions at the national and local level will be on the ballot.
Democratic institutions play a key role in strengthening both domestic cohesion and foreign policy. The bilateral relationship between Mexico and Guyana has evolved rapidly and Mexico has become the largest importer of Guyanese rice (201,000 tons were shipped from July 2017 to June 2018) and Mexican companies such as Qualfon and El Puerto de Liverpool (Courts) have a large presence in business. And the new generations are reaping concrete benefits, as Mexico has awarded scholarships to attend accredited programmes of M. Sc. in agriculture, sustainable development, and oil and gas.
The Mexican Constitution contains tenets of foreign policy that provide a long-term perspective. We have every hope that, after the July 1st election, the bilateral dialogue and development cooperation actions between Mexico and Guyana will continue delivering results for our countries.
