Tax matters are to be confidential

Dear Editor,

The front page of yesterday’s Stabroek News features a banner headline concerning the tax affairs of Guyana Stores Ltd. This headline then takes the readers to an extensive article on page 10 which goes into some details on the company’s tax business featuring an interview with the Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority.

Editor, the tax laws require tax officials to treat all information relating to the tax affairs of any person as secret and confidential and makes any breach of this obligation an offence under the Act.

While the openness of Mr. Statia is commendable, he is clearly in breach of the Act and therefore owes the Company a public apology.

Yours faithfully,
