Poor GTT response to erratic DSL service

 It seems we have become so inured to inefficiencies in Guyana that the current erratic DSL internet service in Georgetown is simply accepted as “normal”. Even the media does not seem to be bothered. 

Businesses and homes are affected and its consequences are obvious.   

Queries about this lack of service to GTT goes the usual way – treated with diffidence and insouciance as is consistent with this entity.  A 72- hour timeline by GTT to look into this issue is now into its third week.   This is an attitude consistent with a monopoly.  

An e-mail sent to the PRO at the Minister of Public Telecommunications – assuming they would be interested in this complaint – was returned because it was invalid.  This email is listed on the Ministry’s web page. 

In the meantime I need to communicate with my office since Skype, WhatsApp and emails are erratic.   Technicians are recommending upgrades to equipment; I am being told routers need to be changed but my thinking is if there are no signals to be routed how can the router be blamed?   

In dealing with another major  inefficient service provider – GPL – we can at least try and generate our own electricity.  I am not aware of a backup internet source.  

The late V.S Naipaul, often criticised for his prescient observations on the functions of Third World societies, must surely be smirking.
