Only solution to the current problem is a national government

Dear Editor,

I write to lend support to Ms Volda Lawrence on her comments to her supporters at Congress Place recently.

I am not being facetious. Ms Lawrence simply had the courage to verbalize what has been her government’s policy from the time it got into power. If you examine the composition of all the boards and all the individual appointments made, you will see what I mean. We all know what is taking place. What she said was no revelation. As one letter writer to your columns said, this is just a manifestation of ethnic parity.

But how different is what she said from what was practised by the previous government? As just one example, what of Dr Luncheon’s remarkable explanation for the extraordinarily high number of Indo-Guyanese in the foreign service: that there were no suitably qualified Afro-Guyanese?

The PPP and PNC are identical twins from the same political womb. And between them they have destroyed the social and spiritual fabric of Guyana and caused a widening chasm between our two peoples. The only solution to the current problem is a national government. The parties must find a mechanism for this to work. Any other option is what is called the devil’s alternative.

Yours faithfully,

Clairmont Lye
