Elderly woman waiting weeks for GWI to restore water service

My 78-year-old mother who lives on the West Coast of Demerara has not been receiving potable water at her home since about two weeks ago. She made several calls to GWI’s Vreed-en-Hoop office and spoke to personnel who promised that they would be there to fix the matter. On December 4, I received a call from her, distraught, over this matter.

Her bills are up-to-date. I made a call to the GWI Vreed-en-Hoop office at 8:39am and spoke to a young lady – Ms Caesar who was reasonably nice (although she hung up before I had finished speaking) and who told me that someone would be there before the week is out. I explained to her that since last week, my mother was told the next day, and ‘before the week out’ is not acceptable. She further stated the crew is presently in the Schoonard area and again, I mentioned that is not my problem.

Editor, water is essential to life and for an elderly woman who meticulously pays her bill, to be going through this is unacceptable. I hope the relevant authorities visit her sooner rather than ‘before the week out’. To go a step further, I hope that the entire GWI policies can be looked into; there are so many that are not right. Again, to repeat that clichéd term: Water is essential for life.
