Busy weekend for country’s top cyclists

The nation’s cyclists are in for a busy weekend as two events are scheduled to pedal off on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday, the National Park circuit will be transformed into a speedway with the staging of the 27th annual R&R International 11-race cycling programme.

The Hassan Mohamed organized fixture starts at 09:00hrs and is expected to attract the cream of the nation’s wheelsmen in the BMX, Juveniles, Mountain Bikes, Veterans and Senior categories.

Last year’s feature 35-lap event was won by Team Evolution’s Paul DeNobrega. The city based rider took the spoils in a time of one hour, 15 minutes and 31 seconds.

Other winners of the programme last year included: Brighton John (Juniors and Juveniles 10-laps), Kenwyn Collins (12-14 Boys and Girls), Ian Jackson (Veterans U-50), Andrew Spencer (Veterans O-50), Monty Parris (Veterans O-60), Ajani Cutting (BMX 6-9 Years), Alex Leung (9-12) and Thuran Garbarran (12-14).

On Sunday, the riders will take their talents to West Demerara to compete in the 40-mile version of the race which will be sponsored by the same long standing company.

The race commences at Schoonord in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, proceeds to Parika and returns to the point of origin for the conclusion.

Starting time is 08:00hrs.

Some big names like Hamza Eastman, Geron Williams, Stephano, Jamal John, Junior Niles, Orville Hinds, Michael Anthony and Alonzo Ambrose are expected to be in the peloton.
