GTTA Mash cadet, junior TT C/ships serves off Friday

The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) will kick off the 2018 calendar with the Mashramani cadet and junior championships Friday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

The tournament, to be sponsored by the National Sports Commission, comes after a two-year hiatus, following discussions with Director of Sports, Christopher Jones.

The tournament, which ends Monday, will see participation in 15 categories in both singles and doubles for boys and girls from nine years and under to 18 years and under.

According to a release from the GTTA, it managed to convince Jones of the need to reintroduce the championships who then gave his organization’s commitment to provide funding of the event.

In previous years, the Mashramani cadet and junior championships, were a part of the GTTA’s domestic calendar of events where many of the top local racquet wielders staked claims for supremacy.

Trophies will be rewarded to the top three competitors in all events at the end of the competition.

Players interested in participating in the championships are ask to contact national Coach and GTTA General Secretary, Linden Johnson on 621-7630, email: lindenj20032003@yahoo.com or GTTA Hon Treasurer, Deirdre Edghill on telephone 6504520, email: deirdrebaynes@hotmail.com

This year the Caribbean Table Tennis Federation’s (CRTTF) cadet and junior championships will be held April 2-7 in Havana, Cuba but it is not clear at this point whether the GTTA will be sending a team or more importantly, whether they will use this tournament as a yardstick for selection of the players in the event that a team will go since the GTTA is one of those national associations which have been delinquent in ensuring that a proper selection process is in place with respect to the selection of its national teams.
