A Demerara XI was yesterday crowned the overall winners of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) girls U19 T20 tournament despite their final round one-run loss to the President’s XI at the Everest Cricket Club ground.

Both sides ended the tournament on four points. Demerara, however, copped the crown by virtue of having a superior net run-rate.

The day began with the President’s XI winning the toss and electing to bat.

They found themselves in early trouble with seamer Cherry-Ann Fraser, sniffing the initial breakthrough by bowling Sari Mangalee for two.

The select side quickly slipped to 23 – 5 as Lavern Welcome (2-3) and skipper Mandy Mangru (2-4) ripped through the middle order with the side eventually crumbling for 38 all out in 18 overs.

None of the batters managed to reach double figures with extras contributing 14.

In what was expected to be a straightforward run chase for the Demerara XI, which is made up of a number of national players, it quickly turned disastrous with the score sitting on 29 – 5.

Leg-spinner, Kassica Munroe was the chief destroyer grabbing 4-11 after  bamboozling the top order while Player-of-the-Match, Shenita Grimmond (2-3) and Lafona Gileeous (2-10) held their nerve at the end to complete the one run victory by dismissing Demerara for 37.
