Williams, Skeete among athletes making Carifta Games qualifying standards

South American Youth games 400m gold medal winner Deshanna Skeete and  World U18 Youth Championships 400m silver medal winner Daniel Williams were among a number of athletes making the CARIFTA Games qualifying standard at the second CARIFTA Games trials organized by the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) and held at the National Synthetic Track, Leonora Sunday.

Williams, who ran 46.72 seconds in placing second at the World U18 Youth Championships in Nairobi Kenya last year, clocked 48.35s Sunday in winning the 400m.

He also clocked 21 seconds flat in the 200m (qualifying standard 21.60s) winning the event from Tyrell Peters, who was second in 22.02s with Brian Roman, third in 22.05s.

Skeete and South American Games 200m silver medallist Kenisha Phillips, were among the outstanding female athletes of the meet.

Skeete clocked 56.95s in winning the girls 400m U17 event, (qualifying standard 57s).

Second place went to Shantae George 57.80s with Keliza Smith third in 57.88s.

Phillips won the 100 and 200m sprint events clocking 11.98s in the  women’s U-20 100m event and returned to register 24.67s in the 200m both times better than the CARIFTA standard of 12s and 24.88s respectively.

In the field events, long jumper Anthony Williams leapt 7.14m to record the longest distance in the U20 men’s long jump.

Tramaine Browne was second with 7.07m. Both athletes bettered the CARIFTA Games qualifying standard of 6.80m.

Female jumpers Chantoba Bright (5.87m), and Toyan Raymond (5.79m) also bettered the U20 qualifying standard.

Bright also recorded a leap of 12.20m in the triple jump while Tartque Boyce won the U20 boys high jump with a leap of two metres flat.

Kissana Glen (2:19.67s) bettered the standard of the U17 girls 800m with Kezra Murry and Joanna Archer’s (2:17.71s) good enough for the U20 800m. Shaquka Tyrell’s timing of 4:55:40s was on par for the 1500m U17 females while Murphy Nash in  2:02.60s won the 800m boys U17 event and Daniel Melville, the U20 800m in 1:55.84s.

The third and final trial will be held at the same venue Sunday.

The CARIFTA Games will be held from March 30 to April 2 in The Bahamas.
