Lewis cameo in vain as Mumbai lose third straight

Mumbai Indians opener Evin Lewis.

MUMBAI, India, CMC – Opener Evin Lewis narrowly missed out on a half-century while West Indies teammate Kieron Pollard suffered the indignity of a first-ball ‘duck’ as Mumbai Indians went down by seven wickets to Delhi Daredevils, to remain bottom of the Indian Premier League with three defeats in as many matches.

Defending 194 at home at the Wankhede Stadium yesterday, Mumbai were put to the sword by England shot-maker Jason Roy who blasted an unbeaten 91 from 53 deliveries at the top of the order.

Rishabh Pant struck 47 in an effort which left the visitors needing just 11 from the final over bowled by left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman.

Roy smashed a four and a six from the first two balls, was held scoreless from the next three, before scrambling a single off the last ball of nerve-jangling enounter.

Sent in earlier, Mumbai piled up 194 for seven off their 20 overs, with opener Suryakumar Yadav top-scoring with 53 in a 102-run opening stand of 54 deliveries with Lewis who stroked 48.

Yadav struck seven fours and a six in a 32-ball knock while the left-handed Lewis belted four fours and sixes off 28 deliveries.

Lewis was the first to fall in the ninth over, miscuing a swing at leg-spinner Rahul Tewatia to be caught at mid-off.

Ishan Kishan then hammered 44 from 23 balls in a 57-run third wicket stand with captain Rohit Sharma (18) to keep the innings flowing.

But Ishan and Pollard perished in successive deliveries in the 16th over, the latter bowled off his pads by seamer Dan Christian and he shaped to clip an ordinary ball to the on-side.

At Eden Gardens in Kolkata, not even a brilliant spell of bowling from West Indies off-spinner Sunil Narine could prevent Kolkata Knight Riders from a five-wicket loss at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The right-armer finished with two for 17 from four stingy overs but Sunrisers still managed to chase down their target of 139 with an over to spare, to remain unbeaten and top of the standings.
