Undefeated Eagles FC crowned as Upper Demerara football champs

Undefeated Eagles FC was crowned the Upper Demerara Football Association 2017/2018 League Champion after battling to a 1-1 stalemate with fellow unbeaten side Net-Rockers on Sunday.

With both teams entering the clash at the Mackenzie Sports Club [MSC] ground, Linden on 21 points, Eagles only needed a draw to secure the coveted title.

The first went exactly as planned for Eagles with their opponent unable to penetrate their backline. It got better for the high flying Eagles, as Clive Nobrega fashioned the equaliser in the 52nd minute.

It was a moment of brilliance from Nobrega, who uncorked a thunderous left foot strike into the roof of the net, after collecting the ball at the top of the 18 yard area.  However, in the space of minutes, Nobrega went from hero to villain as he gifted Net-Rockers forward Clarence Huggins the equaliser in the 76th minute, setting up a tense and dramatic ending.

An errant back pass from the usually reliable Nobrega, was latched onto by the crafty Huggins who easily finished past the onrushing goalkeeper.

The equaliser rejuvenated Net-Rockers, who began to throw bodies forward in search of the winner that would clinch the title.

However, Eagles held firm aided by dogged and physical defending to capture the championship and the bragging rights.

Meanwhile, cellar occupant Hi-Stars edged Botofago 1-0. Veteran hitman Tony ‘Spirit’ Adams secured the only goal compliments of a 29th minute strike.

Upon receiving the ball inside the right of the penalty box, Adams dribbled two players, before slotting past the advancing goalkeeper.
