‘Nationals’ kicks off tomorrow

More than 1500 student athletes and teachers from across the 592 will converge in the city and West Demerara to compete in the 58th edition of the National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships which starts tomorrow.

The National Aquatic Centre, the National Park and the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora will be buzzing with activities as students and teachers from the 15 districts battle for medals and one year’s bragging rights.

Tomorrow from 16:00hrs at Leonora, the 10km road races (male and female) will coincide with the opening ceremony which will be followed by the commencement of Track and Field events like the 800m.

According to Edison Jefford, PRO of the event, speakers at the opening ceremony will include: Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo, Mark Lyte (President of the Guyana Teacher’s Union), Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton and Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry.

On Monday, swimming and cycling will be held from 09:00hrs at the Aquatic Centre and the National Park respectively.

The annual fixture is important for fostering youths in the spirit of competition, goodwill, discipline and striving for excellence.

Upper Demerara/Kwakwani District (10) are the holders of the coveted ‘Champions of Champions Trophy’.
