Gayle cameo not enough to save Knights

Superstar opener Chris Gayle

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates,  CMC – Superstar Chris Gayle sparkled but all too briefly as his Kerala Knights went down by 36 runs to West Indies teammate Evin Lewis’s Punjabi Legends in the T10 League here yesterday.

Chasing 108, Knights were dismissed for 71 runs in the ninth over, to taste defeat for the first time in Group A.

The left-handed Gayle shone with a 19-ball 35, including three fours and sixes, but none of his other teammates reached double figures.

Budding Windies star Fabien Allen (8) and veteran Kieron Pollard (3) both failed.

Barbados-born England star, Chris Jordan, had earlier struck an unbeaten 24 off seven deliveries to support Umar Akmal’s 17-ball 30, as Legends got up to 107 for five off their 10 overs.

Lewis made just 10 to continue a poor run of form which has seen him with scores of 0, 10 and 0 in his three previous innings.

In the other match at the venue, West Indies T20 specialist Andre Fletcher blasted 47 to extend his handsome run in the tournament as Pakhtoons beat Sunil Narine’s Bengal Tigers by seven wickets.

The right-hander struck three fours and five sixes in a whirlwind 18-ball knock, adding 58 for the second wicket with Shafiqullah (16), to pull the innings around from two for one in the first over.

South African Colin Ingram chipped in with 27 off 13 balls.

In his three previous innings over the last week, Fletcher has made scores of 32, 68 not out and 68 not out.

Earlier, West Indies T20 selectee, Sherfane Rutherford, top-scored with 24 from 12 balls as Tigers reached 93 for six off their 10 overs.
