T10-Russell, Pooran help Warriors to last-ball win

Andre Russell … grabbed two wickets but failed with the bat.

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates,  CMC – All-rounder Andre Russell grabbed two wickets and flopped with the bat but his fellow West Indies stars did not just enough to ensure Northern Warriors won in the T10 League here yesterday.

The dynamic Russell finished with two for 22 from his two allotted overs to help limit Sindhis to 91 for six off their 10 overs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Captain Australian Shane Watson blasted a top score of 50 from 28 balls but found no support as no other batsman passed 11.

In reply, Russell fell cheaply for eight batting at number four but Warriors still managed to pull off an exciting last-ball, one-wicket victory.

Left-hander Nicholas Pooran top-scored with 17 from 10 balls while opening partner Lendl Simmons and captain Darren Sammy both got 14, knocks which proved crucial to Warriors’ run chase in the end.

Barbadian fast bowler Jofra Archer was brilliant in taking two for 14 from his two overs.

In the other match of the doubleheader, West Indies Twenty20 skipper Carlos Brathwaite failed with the bat as the Dwayne Bravo-led Maratha Arabians defeated Rajputs by 10 wickets.

Brathwaite made just two in Rajputs’ 63 for seven off their 10 overs, with Bravo claiming a single wicket for 15 runs.

In reply, Arabians motored to their target off five overs with openers Hazratullah Zazai (29 not out) and Englishman Alex Hales (27 not out) carrying the run chase.
