Police arrest Paradise Invaders

GT Beer 8-a-side Football Championship

Defending champion Georgetown Police and Golden Stars secured hard-fought wins when the GT Beer 8-a-side Football Championship continued on Friday at the All-Saints ground in New Amsterdam.

The lawmen arrested Paradise Invaders by a 2-1 scoreline in front of the sizable crowd that descended on the venue. Deon Rodney handed the officers the initial lead in the fourth minute.

It was a brilliant goal from Rodney, who directed a well-placed header past the opposing custodian, after latching onto a perfectly weighted cross from Kester Dundas.

However, Paradise immediately responded in the form of star striker Olvis Mitchell, scorer of a seventh minute conversion.

Nonetheless, Teon Rodrigues secured what proved to be the winner in the 52nd minute.

The nippy Rodrigues made his presence felt in a timely manner, stabbing his effort into the back of the net, after the goalkeeper fumbled the ball into his path.

Meanwhile, Golden Stars edged Mahaica Determinators 1-0 on penalty kicks after regulation time ended 1-1.

Samuel Vandyke handed Mahaica the initial lead in the third minute from the penalty mark after he was brought down by the onrushing goalkeeper with a clumsy challenge.

Stepping up to the mark, the composed Vandyke calmly slotted his effort past the goalkeeper.

However, Golden Stars secured the equaliser in the dying moments of the contest, as veteran forward Nigel Denny etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 55th minute.

It was an opportunistic finish from Denny, who slotted home into the back of the net after a cross into the box was inexplicably fumbled by the goalkeeper.

The tournament continues on Wednesday at the same venue with another doubleheader. In the opening clash, Paradise will oppose Number 5 village from 19:00hrs with the second matchup slated to pit Monedderlust against Rosignol from 21:00hrs.
