Victoria Kings in come-from-behind win

Elite league sides Ann’s Grove and Victoria Kings secured contrasting wins, when the Guyana Football Federation [GFF] ‘Stag Beer Super-16 Football Championship’, continued on Saturday.

Staged at the Golden Grove Community Center ground, Ann’s Grove brushed aside Soesdyke 3-0. It was a clinical performance from Ann’s Grove, who broke the deadlock in the form of young star Phillip Williams in the 16th minute.

It was a brilliant individual effort from the nippy forward, who uncorked a powerful shot from outside the 18 yard box, which settled into the bottom corner of the net.

The aforesaid conversion proved to be the only notable highlight of the first half in front of the small crowd that descended on the venue.

The second half mirrored the first, with Ann’s Grove recording two conversions in the space of 10 minutes to put the game beyond reach and extinguish any hopes of a Soesdyke comeback.

The lanky Quincy Barry was the first to make his presence felt upon the resumption of play via a 53rd minute effort.

Standing over a free-kick 20 yards out in the centre of the field, Barry uncorked a curling effort that sailed into the top corner, giving the opposing goalkeeper no chance.

The wily Ryan Seales then sealed the result in the 63rd minute with the simplest of finishes.

Racing into the penalty area, Seales calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net after latching onto a cross from the right side of the field.

Meanwhile, Victoria Kings edged Buxton Stars 2-1. The Buxtonians took the unexpected lead in the 42nd minute when Eion Abel netted.

The burly Abel raced onto a through pass, before curling his effort past the onrushing goalkeeper from just inside the penalty area.

However, a quick-fire double from Quincy Holder in the space of two minutes ensured Victoria secured a come from behind result. Holder levelled proceedings, as he lashed his effort into the back of the net in the 52nd minute.

He speedster quickly returned to hurt the opposition in the 54th minute, directing his effort past the opposing shot-stopper. The tournament continues on Christmas Day with another doubleheader.
