Plant trees

There are over three trillion trees around the world.

October 5 is designated National Day of Tree Planting in Guyana. Trees are planted on this day every year. But it should not be the only day we plant trees. This can be done more often. The city in particular needs some new ornamental trees to replace the ones lost over the years to poor maintenance, flooding and removals to make space for paved areas to park cars.

We are much poorest over this senseless loss. Why anyone would want to tear up the limited green space in the city is beyond me. On Brickdam alone many trees and green spaces were lost at three ministries and several business houses.

Planting trees is a lifelong investment. It is important to plant trees to combat air pollution as they absorb carbon dioxide and purify the air we breathe in. Trees are both a natural resource and an asset to humans, animals and birds as they provide food, homes and protection.

Outside of the city and in the forested areas wildlife depend on trees for their habitat.

Lethem took the lead to plant trees as part of its town week activities under the theme ‘10,000 Trees Project’. Various other communities are doing likewise.

Plant and/or adopt a tree and change a life as we promote a green Guyana. This is the way to ensure the well-being of the trees.

Until next week, Happy Gardening.
