Vilvoorden labourer murdered

The Police say they are investigating the murder of Kevin Betancourt, 23, a labourer of Vilvoorden,Essequibo Coast which occurred about 21:30h yesterday at Pomona, Essequibo Coast allegedly by 20 year-old of Pomona Housing Scheme,Essequibo Coast who has since been arrested.

Guyanese must reject these attempts at mis-direction on what Constitution says about majority

Dear Editor, I refer to the article `Speaker erred in ruling no-confidence motion passed – to AG says’ published in the Stabroek News of Monday, 31 December in which a claim is made by Attorney General Basil Williams that the difference in wording between articles 168 and 106(6) had an effect on whether the majority vote should be 34 votes as opposed to 33 votes.

Police clamping down on bikers

Following reports of a group of bikers riding motorcade-fashion on public roads without safety gear and in a manner dangerous to the public, Traffic Chief Linden Isles says the police are clamping down on the bikers.

Dear Editor, Further to my  letter published in Stabroek News yesterday headed `Guyana constitution requires only a majority for the no confidence motion to pass’, I wish to draw attention to this extract from paragraph 51 of the Kilman v Speaker of Parliament of the Republic of Vanuatu judgment: “…the absolute majority is to be assessed against 51 members of Parliament of which a majority, simple or absolute, is 26.”

Venezuela, over the years, would have been monitoring closely both the exploratory work by ExxonMobil in its search for what, as it turns out, is Guyana’s huge reservoir of oil reserves, the various oil finds that have been realised since around May 2015 and now the unfolding plans for the start of the oil recovery exercises which are imminent and which can transform Guyana’s economic fortunes in the period ahead.
