Harmon rejects Jagdeo’s claims over GECOM letters

Minister of State Joseph Harmon has rejected claims by Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo that government has perpetuated a fraudulent act by sending two letters to the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and encouraged Jagdeo to reconsider attending a meeting with President David Granger on Wednesday (see other story on page 2.)

Dear Editor, The 1980 Guyana Constitution Article 106 was radically amended during the 1999-2001 Constitution Reform period by the addition of two new clauses 106 (6) and (7) based on the recommendations of the report of the Constitutional Reform Commission (CRC)  of July 17, 1999 which provided for “the Cabinet, including the President, who is part and parcel of the Cabinet as provided for in Article 106, must resign if the government is defeated by a majority of all the members of the National Assembly on a vote of confidence” Please note that the CRC does not appear to have recommended a three-month period within which elections were to be held nor does it appear that it provided for an extension by a 2/3 majority of the National Assembly.

Technical Drawing must be ‘fully restored’ to secondary schools – retired Industrial Arts teacher

Retired University of Guyana Engineering, Drawing and Design Lecturer, Andy Moore, who served for several years as one of the country’s more prominent Industrial Arts teachers has told Stabroek Business that given what would appear to be the trajectory of the country’s developmental focus, what he sees as a decline in the focus of Technical Drawing in the schools’ curriculum could come back to haunt us “in a big way” once we begin “what one imagines will be a major infrastructure development programme to go along with our wider ambitions as a nation.”
