Roger Khan’s bid for early release hits snag

An attempt by convicted Guyanese drug kingpin Shaheed ‘Roger’ Khan to secure an early release from prison in the United States is facing opposition as the amendment of an existing law on which he has based his petition does not take effect until July 25th, seventeen days after his current sentence comes to an end.

Opposition-nominated commissioners accused of stalling GECOM’s work as walkouts continue

For the eighth time in a row, the statutory meeting of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) ended prematurely yesterday due to a walkout from the opposition-nominated commissioners, one of whom has suggested that all meetings be suspended until the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has ruled on the legality of the December 21st No-Confidence Motion against government.

A historic night brought the curtain down on the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ East Coast Demerara Championships as Melanie `B’ defeated Paradise `A’ 2-1 in a nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out to lift the coveted title for the second time on Monday.

A half-century from national youth batsman Shamar Yearwood which was backed up by his side’s bowlers secured a semi-final spot for the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) who defeated GNIC by 61 runs in the final round of the GCA/American Youth Premier Cricket League Under-19 Cricket Competition, at MSC yesterday.

Dear Editor, In spite of the resolution of the imbroglio that had confronted the Local Government Commission (LGC) a few months ago, with regard to the approval of its 2019 work programme and the release of funds for the payment of its expenses, including the salaries and emoluments for its staff and commissioners, which I might add, are not insignificant, the LGC seems to be still paralyzed, as many months are going by and yet one cannot hear anything out of them, particularly as it relates to the implementation of the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry into the operations of the Georgetown City Council, which was delivered to them almost half a year ago.
