One thousand primary school pupils engaged in a chess tournament in Bremen, Germany. The tournament’s theme was “Schach macht schlau” (“Chess makes you smart”). The pupils of Bremen primary schools learn chess once per week on a structured basis. Over the years, a similar initiative was discussed in Guyana, but the idea of structured chess was never realised. Psychologists are on record as saying chess helps a child to focus.
