The Red Cherry Restaurant sponsored seven-round chess tournament for children and youth to improve the quality of their game and ensure that chess is more competitive is being hosted this weekend.

The Red Cherry’s sponsorship of a children’s tournament on behalf of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) is an unequivocal forward step for the assured development of the game.

It is felt that only by participating in competitive chess through tournaments can one improve one’s play and increase one’s FIDE rating points. A prodigy is created when a person plays chess at a young age. Russia’s former world champion, Anatoly Karpov, learnt chess at four. So did lots of chess grandmasters who excelled and matured into prominence.

Lunches with ice cream will be handed out free of cost on each playing day. At the conclusion of the tournament, medals and trophies will be distributed.

Meanwhile, the 2019 Annual General Meeting for the election of office bearers of the GCF, initially scheduled for July 21, has been postponed until Sunday, August 4, at the National Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue.
