The Golden Jaguars suffered their second largest ever defeat against Caribbean giant Jamaica losing 4-0 yesterday at the National Track and Field Center, Leonora in their League-B matchup of the Concacaf Nations League.
The fifth ever meeting of the nations was rendered irrelevant at the end of the first half as the Jamaicans romped to a commanding 3-0 lead.
Analysis of the numbers indicate that Guyana completed 192 passes after attempting 241 at a rate of 80%. On the other hand, Jamaica completed 432 passes from 492 at a conversion of 89%.
The aforementioned translated into 64% possession for the visitors with the Guyanese mustering 36%.
Guyana’s starting XI for the clash was Akel Clarke, Kevin Layne, Matthew Briggs, Sam Cox, Sheldon Holder, Keanu Marsh-Brown, Daniel Wilson, Kelsey Benjamin, Liam Gordon and Neil Danns.
The rout commenced in the 10th minute as Elvis Powell rifled a shot into the lower left
corner from inside the center of the box. The conversion silenced the gathering which numbered less than a 1000 individuals.
Powell doubled his tally in the 25th minute, slotting into the empty net past the onrushing goalkeeper following a simple one-two pass combination inside the area.
The lopsided score line continued in the 44th minute when Devor Orgill scored, blasting into the lower left corner from inside the center of the box, after receiving a right side pass from Shamar Nicholson.
Orgill would make his presence felt once more for the Reggae Boyz, thumping past the custodian from inside the area in the 54th minute.
Guyana failed to muster any form of offensive semblance and quality in the match. Their lack of quality was compounded by a dominant Reggae Boyz rearguard which easily thwarted every attempt.
The Golden Jaguars only noteworthy chance in what was an abject performance occurred in the 83rd minute, as a Stephen Duke-McKenna free-kick from outside the box was parried to safety by the diving custodian.
The Golden Jaguars will now turn their attention to the second round of matches which will occur in October. Guyana will travel to Antigua and Barbuda on the 11th, before hosting the reverse fixture three days later.
The final round of matches will then occur during the month of November. Guyana will host Aruba on the 15th before traveling to Jamaica three days later.
Winner of the group will advance to the League-A section of the competition in the subsequent edition. Meanwhile, Antigua and Barbuda defeated Aruba 2-1 in the second match of the group.
