A quarrel between two brothers escalated and ended in the death of one yesterday at their home at Enterprise, East Coast Demerara.
The dead man has been identified as Satnarine Jattan called Dalip, 47, a painter, of 471, Charlotte Street, Enterprise, East Coast Demerara. The incident occurred at around 3.30 pm yesterday.
Police in a statement last night said that the brother is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Initial investigations have revealed that Satnarine and the suspect were imbibing and subsequently were involved in an argument.
The police said that Satnarine was later found lying motionless with a wound to his abdomen. He was taken to CC Nicholson Hospital at Nabaclis, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Last night, relatives and neighbours congregated at the home and offered their condolences.
The mother of the brothers, Dassie Samaroo sat in disbelief as she grieved over the tragedy from earlier in the day.
Samaroo explained that while it is a norm for the brothers to consume alcohol, they would not get violent.
“They don’t fight and so I don’t know what come in them today… One was in the hammock and one was sitting in the chair and they were arguing. I don’t know [what they were arguing about] but they were drinking rum,” the mother said.
She stated that she yelled at her sons to stop the arguing and went back to her cooking.
“I don’t know what really happen after that. Me see the one (Satnarine) go at the back, me na know wa really happen. And he go and fall down when I go to he now I rub him up and so he na respond and I see he get a bore at the stomach,” the mother recounted.
The mother said that her other son stood in disbelief.
“And I don’t know wa he bore him with, me na see… the other son was standing here he didn’t tell me anything nor I didn’t ask him nothing because I was trying with the one there,” the distraught mother said.“I am angry at him yes but I am also sorry for him because look where he has to end up…one dead and another gone and throw away his life,” the mother lamented as she spoke with reporters.
