The University of Guyana (UG)and the Everest Cricket Club (ECC) took first innings honours over Third Class and the Transport Sports Club (TSC), respectively at the weekend in the Georgetown Cricket Association Noble House Seafoods second-division two-day cricket competition.
Both matches were dampened by rain, resulting in the final day, Sunday, being abandoned.
UG, after being inserted by Third Class at the Muslim Youth Organisation ground, compiled 236 before being dismissed in the 49th over.
The nifty Melroy Stephenson led the way for the students with a knock of 69 while Pavindrall Persaud (30) and Devon Paul (29) supported. Off-spinner Teekaram George nabbed 6-54 to spearhead Third Class’ efforts with the ball.
His side was then dismissed for 72 inside 18 overs as Paul (5-40) and off-spinner Dwayne Dodson (5-20) ran through the batting line up.
UG, after securing first innings and lead of 164 runs, decided against enforcing the following on and ended the day on 57-0 as Stephenson (24) and Godfrey Thakurdin (29) took their side to the close. The final day was abandoned.
Meanwhile, over at TSC, the host surrendered first innings points to Everest. TSC, who won the toss and elected to bat, were dismissed for 170 in 34.4 overs with Devaughn Nandan composing an innings of 61 while national under- 19 player Joel Spooner (22) failed to kick on after a start. TSC were dislodged by former first class player Amir Khan (6-27) who bowled brilliantly.
Everest in their first innings reply, scampered to 179-8 in 50 overs at the close of play on day one to take first innings.
Khan returned to lead the way with an innings of 41 as Azeem Azeez (4-41) and Spooner (3-40) combined to give Everest a few nervous moments. Day two in that encounter as well was abandoned.
