Youths On The Rise Guyana in collaboration with Jewan Ka Nritya Dance Group will hold their Cancer Awareness Walk and Seminar next Saturday, October 19, under the theme: ‘Supporting the Fighter, Admiring the Survivor, Honouring the Taken’.

The non-governmental organisation (NGO) was founded last year by youths who wanted to make a difference in the lives of others and is focused on youth development and humanitarian work, targeting families and youths from communities throughout the country with free health care, counselling, tutoring, and mentoring. Youths on the Rise Guyana aims to involve youths in as much community and development work as possible and create sustainable projects and opportunities for the less fortunate. So far, this work has included social projects, training opportunities, human and infrastructural development, medical assistance, domestic violence awareness, educational and recreational activities involving youth development, distribution of food, toys, books, clothing and the hosting of hot meal drives among many others. All activities and events are self-funded by the organisation and sometimes by sponsorship from members of the business community and corporate bodies.

Since it first arrived on the scene, the NGO has engaged in numerous outreaches and campaigns under the co-directorship of Mahadevi Doobay-Girdhary, Chanderpaul Jaimangal, Sasha Rawof, Annabella Dhaniram and Andre Naniram. Rawof, Dhaniram and Naniram are the organisation’s co-founders.

It held a walk on September 29, as part of its their Suicide Awareness Campaign. Miss India Guyana 2019 Rashena Hanif and Miss Eco Guyana 2019 Cintiana Harry were involved along with other prominent people hoping to make an impact on suicide in Guyana.

“We are hoping to let people see how important it is to have regular checkups, especially for women to have early detection to save their lives,” Rawof said in reference to cancer.

Assembly point for the walk is at the Leonora Primary School Bridge. Persons are asked to be assembled for 5.45 am as the walk begins 6 am. The walk leads to the XS Bar and Lounge Board Walk (Lot 1 Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara) which is the designated venue for the seminar. Interested persons are asked to contact the NGO through its Facebook Page: Youths on the Rise Guyana, for further information. Wear pink to show your support.
