The second Grand Prix chess competition, sponsored by Gaico Construction, began on Thursday evening and continues today with two rounds at the National Resource Centre, Woolford Avenue. Ten players secured Grand Prix points during the first competition. The top six were:

1. Wendell Meusa – 20 points

2. Taffin Khan – 15 points

3. Loris Nathoo – 12 points

4. Davion Mars – 9 points

5. Shiv Nandalall – 7 points

6. Glenford Corlette – 5 points

The accumulated Grand Prix points would determine whether a player qualifies to represent Guyana at the 2020 Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. In addition to the four Gaico-sponsored competitions, the 2020 National Chess Qualifiers and the 2020 National Chess Championships would be recognised for Grand Prix points also.

In this new competition, Meusa is likely to be the favourite to win, if Anthony Drayton does not participate. Drayton did not participate in the first Grand Prix contest. His place is assured for the 2020 Olympiad, however, owing to the fact he is the highest FIDE-rated Guyanese player and he is the 2019 national chess champion.

It may be interesting to observe, nevertheless, how he will fare against Meusa in this the second competition.
