The 2nd edition of the ‘GuyOil/Tradewind Tankers Secondary Schools Football League’ was officially launched yesterday at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.

The event which is slated to commence on October 27th, will feature 10 teams battling in a league format. The matches will be held on Sundays and Mondays, with the final match date penciled for December 8th.

The competing teams are defending champion Annandale, St Stanislaus College, St John’s College, President’s College, Berbice High School, Cummings Lodge Secondary, Marian Academy, Lodge Secondary, Queen’s College and Charlestown Secondary.

Winner of the event will pocket $200,000 towards a project, while the second, third and fourth place units will collect 100,000, $50,000 and $25,000 respectively for a school initiative.

Also, the eventual victor and the runner-up will earn respective berths to the Goodwill Football Championship.

Petra organization Co-Director Troy Mendonca, coordinator of the event, stated, “I want to give a big congrats to GUYOIL and Tradewind Tankers,” adding that league play at any level is pivotal to the development of players.

  Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education’s Lorraine Barker-King stated, “the Ministry of Education is pleased to be associated with the tournament. The Ministry of Education is a strong advocate of the arts.”   She further added, “The sport teaches winning and losing. Ultimately it teaches about life.”

Jorge Abukhalil, Executive of the Tradewind Tankers stated, “We strongly believe in sport and it’s a great opportunity for you guys to develop your talents and yourself as a team.”

Also, Marketing and Sales Manager Jacqueline James said, “What we recognized is that sport plays an important role in the development of the child. We recognize that you’re doing something you love and that you are doing something for your school.”
