A fiery spell of fast bowling from 23-year-old Nial Smith condemned Georgetown to their third successive defeat, falling to Lower Corentyne by seven wickets in the third round of the ongoing SBF Petroleum Jaguars One-Day League at Bourda, yesterday.
Smith recorded figures of 6-41 in a spell reminiscent of West Indian fast bowling fury of the past which skittled Georgetown for 104 inside 37 overs. The day began with Georgetown winning the toss and electing to bat, a decision skipper Leon Johnson and the other batsmen must have rued.
They had to contend with Smith who ran in and had his tail up, first removing Joshua Persaud (6) followed by Johnson (0) Christopher Barnwell (11), Jeremiah Scott (0) and Steven Jacobs (19) to complete his five-for.
Qumar Torrington (15) was his sixth scalp; Smith also floored Raymond Perez and Ashmead Nedd (11) after rushing into their ribcage areas. The impressive quickie also struck Paul Wintz (19) who fought throughout his stay at the crease.
Smith’s efforts were backed up by the batsmen who coasted home to 105-3 in 28.4 overs. The chase was steered by Jonathan Foo who continued his rich vein of form with an unbeaten knock of 42 inclusive of four fours.
He shared in a 64 second-wicket stand with West Indies under – 19 selectee Kevlon Anderson (35) who struck the ball sweetly before falling near the end of the run chase to leg spinner Steven Sankar (2-27) while the other wicket went to Ashmead Nedd, who nabbed 1-17 from his ten overs to complete another containing spell. Meanwhile, over at Enmore, Upper Corentyne got past East Coast by 46 runs. That match saw the former batting first and posting 258 at the end of their allotted overs with Clinton Pestano (96) leading the way and missing out on a well-deserved century. Anthony Bramble (34) and Alex Algoo (31) supported. Damuka Ngqando (3-51) was the pick of the bowlers for the East Coast side who in response, fell short with Amir Khan ending unbeaten on 75 while Robin Williams (52) struck a fifty. Off spinners Eon Hooper (2-51) and Jonathan Rampersaud (2-33) shared four wickets between them for the eventual winniers. (Royston Alkins)
