Juma, Taylor, Alijohn lead St Stanislaus to chess title

Favourites St. Stanislaus College, boasting a number of junior national players, ran out winners of the team  category of the Marian Academy Inter- Schools Invitational chess tournament held at the school’s auditorium last weekend.

 Boasting a star-studded lineup of Jaden Taylor, Ghansham Alijohn, Chelsea Juma and Jorrey Troyer St Stanislaus won from Marian Acedemy and Queen’s College in that order.

The Marian Academy team boasted players of the calibre of Ethan and Ronan Lee, Sasha Shariff and Odit Rodrigues while Queen’s College team included the likes of Rajiv Lee, Ricardo Narine, Demetrius Drupe and Omesh Dyal.

In the Secondary Schools individual competition, the winner was Samirah Gobin of Al Ghazali Islamic Academy while Marian Academy’s  Luca Dotto was the runner-up. Another Marian Academy student Angel Rahim was voted the best female player.

Marcello Leonard of the Hinterland Scholarship Dorm was the winner of the U14 event and Juilon Lord of School of the Nations, the winner of the U18 Open event.

Among the Primary School students Arysh Raghunauth of Mae’s School was the winner with Mahir Rajkumar of Mae’s the runner up. Rajkumar also won the best female prize.

Omar Sharif of Mae’s was the winner of the U12 category while Jacob Mc Donald of School of the Nation’s broke  the Mae’s dominance by winning the Under-8 category.

According to Tournament Director John Lee, this is the second year the tournament is being played and it attracted a large turnout.

Apart from the traditional chess playing schools like Queen’s College, St Stanislaus College and Marian Academy, there was also participation from the Al Ghazali Islamic Academy.

“We also have a few players from the Hinterland Scholarship Dorm,” Lee told Stabroek Sport.
