Barbados has to urgently build new economy – Owen Arthur

(Barbados Nation) Former Barbadian Prime Minister , Professor Owen Arthur, says Barbados has to urgently build “a new economy”, warning that “the boat is pulling out of harbour and we are not on it”.

Arthur, professor of practice at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill, said Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley kept him “very, very busy” helping Government on several matters, including the development of a new industrial policy, and the arrangements for next year’s United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD 15) quadrennial meeting here, October 15 to 23, 2020.

He cautioned Government that Barbados could no longer rely on unique tax benefits and preferential trade arrangements, and instead must focus on technology and innovation.
