Pensioner drowns after jumping into river to escape cops

A 69-year-old man drowned on Saturday evening after he reportedly jumped overboard at Kwakwani Waterfront, in Region 10, in a bid to evade the police.

The dead man has been identified as Leon Williams.

Regional Commander Hugh Winter last evening confirmed Williams’ death.

He said Williams body was found floating in Upper Berbice River in the vicinity of Kwakwani waterfront early on Sunday morning.

An autopsy performed yesterday showed that he died as a result of drowning.

Winter explained to Stabroek News that the police received an anonymous call on Saturday evening informing them about a male, who was armed with a cutlass and allegedly behaving in a disorderly manner. As a result, he said, ranks were dispatched to the area.

Upon noticing the police, Williams reportedly plunged overboard in a bid to escape. He was reported to have been under the influence of alcohol.
