The University of Guyana (UG) once again lauded their student athletes during its 2019 sports awards ceremony at the institution’s Turkeyen Campus Friday evening. 

The awards ceremony, which has been a regular feature under the administration’s sports organizer Lavern Fraser-Thomas, highlighted the sterling athleticism of students of the nation’s highest learning institution. 

Leading the list of awardees were Osafa Dos Santos (Faculty of Education and Humanities) and Ruth Sanmoogan (Faculty of Health Sciences) who were adjudged the male and female champion athletes respectively, following the completion of the 2019 inter-faculty championships.

The Faculty of Health Sciences were the 2019 winners of the event. 

Chess king and queen awards went to Davion Mars and Anicia Patterson respectively while scrabble queen Christina Basil and scrabble king Jafar Gibbons were awarded for executing their tact and winning the 2019 installment of those two competitions. 

Following the presentation of the annual report presented by Fraser-Thomas and a feature address delivered by Ms. Rowena Seymour, Principal of St. Winefride’s Secondary School, the awards were handed out.

Most improved student athlete: Cubator Stephen (basketball) 

Most improved student athlete: Anthony Fredericks (cricket) 

Most improved student athlete: Sidney Nelson (chess) 

National association cricket.

Most wickets taken: Omesh Danram (12)

Most runs scored: Ershad Alli (365 runs)

Most wickets taken in a single game: Keon Roberts 

Basketball: Jabari Joseph 

Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association – U23 league winners: UG team

National Colleges Athletics Championship 2019 

Champion female athletes: Ruth Sanmoogan and Jevina Sampson 

Champion male athlete: Osafo Dos Santos 

Special awards were also presented to a number of other athletes for their willingness to embrace sports and academia. (Royston Alkins)
