East Coast gold miner arrested over illegal pistol, ammo

A 52-year-old gold miner was on Thursday arrested by police from the Etering-bang Police Station, after he was found with an illegal firearm and ammunition.

At the time, the ranks, along with ranks of the Guyana Defence Force, were on river patrol duty in the vicinity of Mode Hole, Cuyuni River, when they stopped the boat the man was travelling in and carried out a search.

Police said the suspect, of Enterprise, East Coast Demerara, was found with a Beretta 9 mm pistol, along with 11 rounds of 9mm ammunition in his waistband.

The man was arrested and escorted to the Eter-ingbang Police Station and placed in custody. Charges are likely to be brought against him this week.
