A teen was yesterday granted bail by a city magistrate on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.

It is alleged that Akelo Nurse, 18, of 273 Independence Boulevard, on January 25th, at Charles-town, had a .45-calibre pistol in his possession without being a licensed firearm holder.

Nurse pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Representing the accused before acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus was attorney Clyde Forde. He told the court that on the day in question the defendant and two others were riding along a one-way street when they saw the police and turned away. He added that Nurse subsequently fell and was later arrested by the police and taken to the station, where a rusty firearm was shown to him.

Police prosecutor Adduni Inniss made no objection to bail being granted but requested that conditions by applied.

As a result, Nurse was later granted his release on $100,000 bail and ordered to lodge his passport and report to the Brickdam Police Station.

The matter is expected to be called again on February 18th.
